Chapter 5 - The Night Charles Stopped Breathing

Vanessa kept staring at the photograph.

“Who wrote that?” I asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You reacted as if you did.”

She shook her head too quickly.

Adrian moved toward her.

“What does Mother remember?”

“Nothing.”

He took another step.

The guards watched closely.

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“She was sedated. She couldn’t remember.”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

The foyer went silent.

I felt cold despite the heat of pain beneath my skin.

“When was I sedated?”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

He looked equally disturbed.

Margaret spoke carefully.

“Mrs. Cross, answer the question.”

Vanessa folded her arms, trying to rebuild control.

“After Charles died. Evelyn was given medication for shock.”

“At the hospital,” I said.

“Yes.”

“I wasn’t taken to the hospital until the next morning.”

Her eyes flickered.

The night Charles died returned to me in broken images.

His wineglass falling.

His hand gripping the table.

Adrian calling 911.

Paramedics kneeling beside him.

Vanessa arriving despite claiming later that she had been out of town.

I remembered sitting in the library after the ambulance left.

Someone gave me water.

Then nothing until dawn.

At the time, I believed grief had erased those hours.

“What did you give me?” I asked.

Vanessa said nothing.

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“What did you give her?”

She pulled away.

“Something to calm her.”

“You weren’t licensed to give her anything.”

“It came from Charles’s prescription cabinet.”

“My husband had no sedatives.”

Vanessa looked toward the front doors again.

The guards did not move.

She was running out of exits.

Margaret placed the forged incapacity petition beside the photograph from Bell’s apartment.

“Your current petition claims Evelyn has memory impairment. If you previously drugged her, that fact would destroy your claim and expose you to criminal liability.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You think this is about legal liability?”

“What is it about?”

She looked at me.

For one moment, her hatred disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

“Evelyn saw Richard in the house that night.”

I sat straighter despite the pain.

“Richard was not there.”

“Yes, he was.”

“No.”

“He arrived through the west entrance before the ambulance.”

I would have remembered.

Unless I had already been drugged.

Adrian’s face lost color.

“Why would Uncle Richard be there?”

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

I understood.

“You called him.”

“He called me.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles had found the accounts.”

Margaret leaned forward.

“What accounts?”

Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.

“Offshore trusts. Insurance structures. Medical billing companies. I didn’t know everything.”

“But you knew enough to drug me.”

“I was trying to keep Richard from panicking.”

“You protected him after my husband collapsed.”

“He said Charles had taken something on his own.”

“Did you believe him?”

She looked away.

No.

She had not.

Adrian stepped back from his wife as if seeing her clearly for the first time.

“You knew my father’s death wasn’t natural.”

“I knew Richard was afraid.”

“And you said nothing.”

“He paid me to keep quiet.”

The answer was brutally simple.

Vanessa had not married Adrian because of love.

She had entered our family already carrying Richard’s money.

“How long had you known Richard?” I asked.

“Before Adrian.”

The words struck my son visibly.

He stared at her.

“You met me through him.”

Vanessa did not deny it.

The dark vehicles outside remained motionless. The trustee’s team had arrived to document coercion, not investigate a possible murder.

The situation had grown beyond anything we prepared for.

Margaret told the forensic accountant to begin securing every document in the mansion.

One guard spoke into his radio.

Then the chandelier flickered.

The mansion’s lights dimmed.

The front security panel went black.

The taller guard checked his earpiece.

“We’ve lost the external camera feeds.”

Vanessa looked toward the driveway.

One of the dark vehicles began rolling backward.

Not leaving.

Being pushed.

A larger black SUV entered through the open gates.

Adrian moved beside me.

“Who is that?”

Vanessa whispered the answer.

“Richard.”

The SUV stopped at the foot of the mansion steps.

Its rear door opened.
