Chapter 15 - The Woman Wearing Rebecca’s Face

The monitor image held for three seconds.

Long enough for me to see the woman clearly.

Same silver-blonde hair as the pickup record.

Same face as the old photographs of Rebecca.

But Charles had mouthed, Not Rebecca.

Then the screen went black.

Vanessa grabbed the monitor.

“Turn it back on.”

No response.

Adrian looked at Thomas Bell.

“Who is she?”

Bell’s face had gone gray.

“I don’t know.”

“You worked with Rebecca.”

“I worked with someone using her name.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You never met my mother?”

“I thought I did.”

The staircase lights switched on one level at a time, creating a path to the third floor.

An invitation.

A threat.

Margaret’s crisis team secured the lobby and side exits, but the building plans were decades old and incomplete. The former clinic contained surgical corridors, service elevators, and underground access tunnels.

Anyone inside could move unseen.

I gripped the railing and climbed.

Every step punished my hips.

Adrian stayed beside me.

Vanessa followed, holding Lily’s backpack.

Richard came behind under guard.

He had stopped insisting we leave.

That frightened me.

At the second-floor landing, I heard Charles coughing through a wall speaker.

“Evelyn.”

I stopped.

His voice carried four years of distance.

“Do not believe what you see in that room.”

“What happened to you?”

“I made the first mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“I trusted Rebecca.”

Vanessa pressed closer to the speaker.

“Is my mother alive?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

“Then who is upstairs?”

Charles did not answer.

The speaker emitted a burst of static.

A woman’s voice replaced his.

“Come find out.”

We reached the third floor.

The surgical wing smelled of disinfectant despite years of abandonment. Someone had restored power, cleaned the operating rooms, and installed modern surveillance equipment.

This was not a desperate hiding place.

It was an active facility.

Room Three stood at the end of the corridor.

A red light glowed above the door.

Adrian tried the handle.

Locked.

Vanessa pounded against it.

“Lily!”

My granddaughter cried from inside.

“Mom?”

Vanessa pressed her forehead to the door.

“I’m here, baby.”

A panel slid open beside the frame.

Inside lay three items.

Charles’s cassette.

Adrian’s bank-box key.

And a small gold seal.

The trust seal.

Rebecca—or the woman pretending to be Rebecca—already possessed everything she demanded.

The midnight exchange had never been real.

She wanted us here.

The wall monitor activated.

The operating room appeared again.

Lily remained tied to the chair but seemed unharmed.

Charles lay on the bed, older and thinner than the man I buried, yet undeniably my husband.

The woman stood between them.

She removed the silver wig.

Dark hair fell around her shoulders.

Vanessa made a strangled sound.

“I know her.”

The woman turned toward the camera.

She was Dr. Nora Keene, the ambulance physician who had called from the prepaid phone.

The woman who claimed Adrian had Charles’s recording.

The woman Richard’s network supposedly hunted.

“Dr. Keene is not Rebecca,” Adrian said.

“No,” Vanessa whispered. “She’s my aunt.”

Rebecca’s younger sister.

A woman erased from every family record I had seen.

Dr. Keene looked into the camera.

“Evelyn, Richard told you Rebecca disappeared. Charles told you she was helping him. Vanessa was told Rebecca died.”

She placed one hand on Lily’s shoulder.

“All three stories were useful. None were true.”

I looked at Richard.

His face showed something new.

Recognition mixed with dread.

“You know her,” I said.

He did not deny it.

The door behind us locked.

The crisis team shouted from the stairwell, but a steel barrier dropped across the corridor, separating us.

Gas began hissing through ceiling vents.

Vanessa covered Lily’s backpack over her mouth.

Adrian pulled his jacket over my face.

Dr. Keene’s voice continued through the monitor.

“The trust seal does not control the estate. It controls the patient archive Charles built before his death.”

Margaret stared at the gold seal.

“What archive?”

“Every forged consent. Every altered record. Every person paid to create medical deaths that looked natural.”

Richard lunged for the seal.

The guards restrained him.

His panic confirmed the scale.

Charles lifted his head from the bed.

“Evelyn,” he called weakly, “the archive opens only with your voice.”

Dr. Keene wheeled a microphone toward him.

Then toward Lily.

Vanessa hit the door with both hands.

“Do not touch her!”

Dr. Keene smiled.

“She is the next direct heir. Her voice can open it too.”

Adrian threw himself against the lock.

I looked at the monitor and saw a small metal instrument near Lily’s hand.

She was cutting through the plastic tie.

Quietly.

Carefully.

My granddaughter had inherited more than money.

Charles saw it too.

He began coughing loudly to hide the sound.

Dr. Keene turned toward him.

Lily freed one wrist.

At that exact moment, the lights failed.

The gas stopped.

Emergency red lamps flashed on.

Someone had overridden the clinic power.

The operating-room door unlocked with a heavy click.

Adrian reached for the handle.

Richard shouted, “Don’t open it!”

He was too late.

The door swung inward.

Lily ran into Vanessa’s arms.

Charles remained strapped to the bed.

Dr. Keene was gone.

A second door at the rear of the operating room stood open.

On the floor lay a live phone.

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

Vanessa froze.

“Mom?”

Rebecca answered.

“Do not trust Charles. He chose which woman would die four years ago.”

I entered the room and looked at my husband.

He stared back at me with tears in his eyes.

Then the computer beside his bed activated.

A video file began loading.

The title appeared in the system window:

EVELYN WHITMORE—AUTHORIZED SUBJECT TERMINATION.

Charles whispered, “I can explain.”

The video reached one percent.
