Chapter 10 - THE HOSPITAL RAID

Margaret entered with four medical staff carrying forged federal transfer orders.
She had expected darkness to create confusion.
Priya locked my bed brakes.
Dr. Reed blocked the doorway.
Sarah pulled the emergency oxygen alarm.
Noise filled the floor.
Margaret did not panic.
She pointed toward my IV.
“You can come peacefully, or the child loses oxygen.”
A hidden clamp restricted the line feeding medication stabilizing my contractions.
Someone had altered the tubing earlier.
Dr. Reed replaced it immediately.
Federal agents entered from both corridors.
Margaret stepped backward.
Ryan appeared behind her.
He had escaped county transport with help from a corrupt deputy.
The biological father of my child stood beside the woman who created the pregnancy.
He looked at my stomach.
Not my face.
“That’s my daughter.”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“You don’t decide biology.”
“I decide access.”
He drew a gun.
Margaret told him to lower it.
For the first time, he disobeyed her.
“You promised me the baby.”
“You were promised a role.”
“I gave the sample.”
“You followed instructions.”
The family hierarchy broke in front of us.
Ryan realized he had never been a future father.
Only another donor Margaret controlled.
He turned the gun toward her.
Jason’s cruelty came through rage.
Ryan’s through calculation.
Now calculation failed.
Ortiz shot the weapon from his hand before he fired.
Agents tackled him.
Margaret tried to escape through the service elevator.
Sarah blocked her.
“You told me obedience would save me.”
Margaret stared at her.
“It did.”
“No. It kept me alive enough for you to use again.”
Sarah stepped aside only when agents reached them.
Margaret was arrested.
The power returned.
My contractions intensified.
The baby was coming.
The operating room prepared for emergency delivery.
As they wheeled me away, Margaret called after me.
“She will need the Carter treatment.”
Dr. Reed stopped.
“What treatment?”
Margaret smiled from behind handcuffs.

“The mutation that makes her valuable will kill her heart within days.”
Nobody knew whether it was truth or one final attempt at control.
