Chapter 12 - NOAH
Noah was four.
The same age Jason began learning obedience from Margaret.
His records disappeared after the hospital raid.
Kyle remembered seeing a little boy at the family church.
Margaret introduced him as a relative’s child.
Jason visited regularly.
He had known Noah was ours before marrying me.
That was why he chose me.
Not love.
Not chance.
Margaret placed the biological parents together to create loyalty around a child they could reveal or hide when useful.
Jason claimed he loved me eventually.
I believed he loved access.
Ortiz traced church donations to a private school in Louisiana.
Noah attended under another surname.
Federal agents found him alive.
The school principal claimed Margaret held lawful guardianship.
The order came from a corrupt family judge already named in the Carter files.
It was suspended.
Noah entered protective placement.
I did not meet him immediately.
I had learned from Hannah and Daniel.
Truth could not be delivered like a rescue command.
A child’s world had to be dismantled carefully.
He saw a photograph of me and said, “That’s the bad lady.”
Margaret had prepared him.
A therapist asked whether I wanted to send a message.
I recorded one sentence.
“My name is Emily, and I will wait until you feel safe.”
Weeks passed.
Then Noah asked to see Lily.
Not me.
He met his baby sister through NICU glass.
He stared at her for ten minutes.
“Grandma said she was mine.”
The therapist asked what he meant.
“She said the baby would make me strong.”
Margaret intended to use Lily’s cells to treat Noah’s version of the mutation.
The children had been designed as medical resources for one another.
Noah thought that gave him ownership.
I knelt beside him.
“Lily can help people when she grows up and chooses.”
He looked confused.
“Grandma chooses.”
“Not anymore.”
He studied my face.
“Did you stop her?”
“Yes.”
“Will she come back?”
“I don’t know.”
Honesty frightened him less than false certainty.
Then he asked, “Are you really my mom?”
“Yes.”
