Chapter 9 - HANNAH

Federal agents traced the television intrusion to a mobile broadcast unit.

Kyle identified the vehicle as an old Carter construction van.

Traffic cameras followed it toward Texas.

Ortiz realized Margaret was returning to the original house.

Why return to a crime scene surrounded by police?

Because the basement contained something officers had not found.

Investigators removed the washing machine and broke the concrete beneath it.

A steel hatch led into an older chamber.

The visible basement had been built over another.

Inside were original files from Margaret’s earliest operations.

Birth records.

Death certificates.

Marriage licenses.

Videos.

And a tunnel leading two houses away.

Margaret had used the neighboring property to enter and leave unseen.

She could have watched my rescue from underground.

The tunnel ended beneath an abandoned garage.

Hannah was found there tied to a chair but physically unharmed.

Margaret had left her as a distraction.

The girl stared at Melissa and said, “You’re not my mother.”

Melissa did not argue.

“I’m the woman they took you from.”

Hannah looked toward the door.

“Grandma said you chose money.”

“I chose nothing.”

The child did not believe her.

Healing would require more than DNA.

Hannah entered protected care.

The hidden chamber revealed Margaret’s next destination.

A private hospital in Texas where every Carter child had been delivered under false records.

The building had closed publicly years earlier.

Its surgical wing remained active underground.

My contractions returned.

This time, doctors could not stop them completely.

My daughter might arrive within hours.

Margaret knew through the labor drug’s expected timeline.

She did not need hospital access to predict me.

She had designed the schedule.

Then Dr. Reed found a tracking capsule beneath the skin near my ankle wound.

Jason had implanted it in the basement.

Margaret still knew exactly where I was.

Security removed the capsule.

Seconds later, the hospital lost power.

Emergency generators failed on my floor only.

A woman’s voice came through the dark room.

“Move the patient.”

Priya raised a flashlight.

May you like

The woman standing in the doorway wore surgical scrubs.

Sarah whispered, “That’s Margaret.”
