Chapter 2 - A Wedding Built on Lies
Six hours earlier, Sofia had believed she was beginning the happiest night of her life.
The wedding reception filled the ballroom of a luxury Dallas hotel with flowers, candles, and soft music.
Javier smiled for photographs.
Carmen accepted compliments as though the wedding belonged to her.
Sofia had ignored the tension in her stomach.
For months, Javier had become increasingly interested in her finances.
He asked when she planned to place his name on the condo deed.
He questioned why she kept a separate savings account.
He became irritated whenever she spoke privately with her attorney.
“We’re getting married,” he had said. “There shouldn’t be anything separate anymore.”
The condo had been purchased five years earlier.
Sofia believed it had been paid for with money her grandmother left her.
Elena always avoided discussing the details.
All Sofia knew was that the property belonged entirely to her.
Carmen hated that.
“A wife shouldn’t prepare for divorce before the wedding,” she once said.
“I’m not preparing for divorce,” Sofia replied. “I’m protecting property I owned before I met Javier.”
Carmen smiled.
“That sounds like the same thing.”
Two weeks before the ceremony, Javier presented Sofia with a document.
He called it a routine marital agreement.
Sofia’s attorney reviewed it and discovered a clause transferring partial ownership of the condo to Javier immediately after marriage.
Sofia refused to sign.
Javier apologized.
He claimed the clause had been added by mistake.
But on the wedding night, Carmen asked about it again.
The reception was nearly over when she cornered Sofia beside the hotel elevators.
“You embarrassed my son.”
“By reading a legal document?”
“By treating him like a thief.”
Sofia tried to walk away.
Carmen gripped her torn lace sleeve.
“That condo should become family property tonight.”
Sofia pulled her arm free.
“No.”
Carmen’s smile disappeared.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
Javier appeared at the end of the hall.
For one hopeful second, Sofia believed he would defend her.
Instead, he checked whether anyone else was watching.
Then he closed the hallway door behind him.
That was when Sofia understood the agreement had never contained a mistake.
The clause was the entire reason they had pressured her to sign.
