Chapter 8 - The Notary Who Was Waiting

Alexander called his attorney, Rachel Monroe.
It was nearly four in the morning.
She answered immediately.
“I need you to check whether anyone attempted to transfer Sofia Bennett’s property tonight.”
Rachel accessed county filing alerts.
A document had been prepared but not yet recorded.
The transfer listed Sofia as the grantor.
Javier was the new co-owner.
Patricia Vale was named as the notary.
The signature time was 2:48 a.m.
At 2:48, Sofia had been running down the hotel stairwell.
Rachel contacted the county fraud unit and froze the filing.
Then she called Patricia.
Patricia answered from a private office twenty miles away.
Rachel identified herself and asked whether Sofia had appeared in person.
Patricia hung up.
Ten minutes later, the office security system recorded Patricia carrying a file box toward her car.
She was trying to leave.
Alexander called a private security supervisor who worked with the building owner.
He did not order anyone detained.
He instructed them to preserve camera footage and notify authorities about suspected document fraud.
Patricia abandoned the box beside the elevator.
Inside were copies of Sofia’s driver’s license, wedding certificate, condo deed, and several pages bearing a copied signature.
There were also text messages printed from Carmen.
One message read:
THE CEREMONY MAKES IT EASIER. FILE BEFORE SHE CHANGES HER MIND.
Another read:
IF SHE REFUSES, JAVIER WILL KEEP HER IN THE SUITE UNTIL SHE CALMS DOWN.
The messages did not describe every act.
But they proved planning.
Carmen continued pretending nothing had happened.
“You’re twisting private family arrangements,” she told Alexander.
He held up the phone.
“Private arrangements do not require forged signatures.”
Javier looked at Sofia.
“I didn’t know Patricia was going to forge anything.”
Sofia opened her eyes.
“You told her to make me sign.”
“I was scared.”
“Of your mother?”
“Of losing everything.”
Sofia’s voice was barely audible.
“You never had my condo.”
Javier’s face tightened.
“That’s not what she told me.”
Everyone looked at Carmen.
For the first time, her superiority vanished.
Alexander understood.
Carmen had promised Javier more than ownership.
She had promised him money connected to the property.
But the condo itself was not worth enough to explain the desperation.
There had to be something else.
Rachel called back.
“I found a second document attached to the transfer package.”
“What is it?”
“A refinancing authorization for six million dollars.”
Alexander looked toward Carmen.
The condo was not the prize.
May you like
It was collateral.
👉 Carmen had planned to borrow six million dollars against property she believed Sofia could be forced to surrender—but the loan application named a secret company owned by Javier.
