Chapter 9 - The Company Behind the Marriage

The company was called JVC Urban Holdings.
Sofia had never heard of it.
Javier claimed it was a future investment venture.
Rachel found that it had been created eleven months earlier.
Three weeks after Javier proposed.
Carmen owned forty percent.
Javier owned sixty.
The company had no employees, no office, and no income.
But it carried nearly two million dollars in private debt.
Carmen had borrowed money from investors by promising a luxury development project in Austin.
The project did not exist.
Payments were due the following Monday.
If they failed to repay the lenders, the fraud would become impossible to hide.
They needed Sofia’s condo to secure a large loan.
Javier’s marriage gave them a believable story.
A husband and wife refinancing shared property.
Except the condo was never shared.
And Sofia had refused to make it shared.
Carmen moved closer to the doorway.
“This has nothing to do with Sofia.”
Alexander looked at her.
“You built a fraudulent company around the date of her engagement.”
“That proves nothing.”
“The loan application lists her condo.”
“She was going to agree.”
Sofia forced herself upright against Elena.
“No. I wasn’t.”
Carmen turned on her.
“You would have, if you cared about your husband.”
Javier whispered, “Mom, stop.”
She ignored him.
“Do you know how much we spent convincing people you belonged in this family?”
Sofia stared at her.
“Convincing people?”
“The wedding. The clothes. The introductions. Javier gave you a life above your station.”
Elena’s arms tightened around her daughter.
Alexander’s expression became frighteningly calm.
“My daughter owned the apartment you wanted to mortgage.”
Carmen laughed.
“A condo doesn’t make her important.”
“No,” Alexander said. “But your decision to attack her over it makes you very important to several investigators.”
Javier stepped backward.
He had finally understood that Carmen’s plan was collapsing.
He turned toward Sofia.
“I didn’t know about the investors.”
She looked at him with exhausted disbelief.
“You knew enough.”
“I thought it was temporary.”
“You helped trap me in a hotel hallway.”
“I never meant for you to get hurt.”
“You grabbed me.”
Javier’s mouth opened.
No defense came.
Then Sofia remembered something Carmen had said before the wedding.
After Monday, no one can touch us.
At the time, Sofia assumed she meant the marriage.
Now she understood.
May you like
Monday was the loan deadline.
👉 Sofia’s memory connected the wedding date to Carmen’s financial deadline—and investigators soon discovered Javier had proposed only after learning the condo’s value.
