Chapter 6 - The Father Who Came Running

Alexander drove across Dallas in fourteen minutes.

He ignored three calls from his chief financial officer and one from the governor’s office.

Nothing mattered except Elena’s voice.

Your daughter needs you.

He had spent four years believing Sofia wanted nothing to do with him.

Every birthday card had been returned.

Every email had gone unanswered.

He thought she hated him for leaving Elena after their marriage collapsed.

What he did not know was that Carmen had helped Javier intercept many of his messages.

She had spent years convincing Sofia that Alexander cared only about business.

When Alexander entered the apartment, Elena stood near the windows in a plain black shirt and jeans.

Neither spoke about the past.

“Where is she?” he asked.

“On her way.”

Alexander noticed a slim envelope on the glass table.

The corner displayed the address of Sofia’s condo.

He picked it up.

His own attorney’s firm appeared in small print on the original deed copy.

Alexander went still.

“Why does Sofia have this?”

“It’s her condo,” Elena said.

“I know.”

Elena stared at him.

“You know?”

“I bought it.”

The room fell silent.

Alexander explained that Sofia’s grandmother had wanted Sofia protected.

The purchase was made through a trust so Sofia would never feel financially controlled by either parent.

Alexander had funded most of it.

The deed contained a restriction preventing transfer without independent legal review.

Elena had never known the full arrangement.

Before she could respond, the elevator doors opened in the hall.

Sofia staggered toward the apartment.

Denise supported her as far as the doorway.

Elena screamed.

Alexander felt the world disappear beneath him.

Sofia collapsed onto the rug.

Minutes later, Javier and Carmen arrived.

They had tracked Sofia through a location-sharing application Javier secretly activated on her phone.

They expected to find only Elena.

Instead, Alexander knelt before his daughter.

Carmen recognized him immediately.

Years earlier, Alexander’s development company had rejected one of her husband’s investment proposals.

She knew his reputation.

She knew his attorneys.

And she knew the condo restriction could expose any forged transfer.

When Sofia whispered, “She wanted my condo,” Alexander understood enough.

Not everything.

But enough.

He picked up the recording phone.

Then he saw Carmen staring at the deed envelope.

That guilty glance told him where to begin.

👉 Alexander asked Carmen one quiet question—and her answer contradicted the words already captured on Sofia’s phone.
