Chapter 1 - The Hand He Stopped

Coraline Ashford’s hand cut through the rain before anyone could scream.
Her diamond bracelet flashed beneath the lights of the Fifth Avenue wedding venue as she lunged toward the exhausted woman standing beside the curb.
“Get away from him.”
Mave Whitlock twisted her body, shielding the little girl clinging to her chest.
But the slap never landed.
Garrett Hail stepped between them and caught Coraline’s wrist inches from Mave’s face.
The bride’s veil jerked forward. Her jeweled shoulder twisted with the force of her stopped momentum.
For one stunned second, hundreds of wedding guests went silent.
Garrett lowered Coraline’s arm and released it.
“Don’t touch them.”
His voice was quiet.
That made it more frightening.
Coraline stared at the man she was supposed to marry in less than twenty minutes.
“You don’t even know why she’s here.”
Garrett didn’t answer.
He was looking at the child.
The little girl lifted her wet face from Mave’s shoulder. She couldn’t have been older than three. Her light-brown hair clung to her cheeks, and her tiny fingers gripped Mave’s faded coat.
Then she opened her eyes.
Pale gray.
Exactly like Garrett’s.
His breath stopped.
Mave saw the recognition strike him. Her arms tightened around the child.
Coraline noticed it too.
Her expression changed for half a second—long enough for Garrett to see fear beneath the arrogance.
Then Coraline forced a brittle laugh.
“She planned this humiliation.”
Mave’s lips trembled, but she didn’t look away.
With one hand still holding the little girl, she reached inside her coat and pulled out a rain-damp smartphone.
“Your mother made me leave.”
Coraline froze.
Garrett looked from the phone to Mave.
Then he turned toward Warren Ashford, Coraline’s powerful father, standing beneath a black umbrella near the limousines.
Warren lowered the umbrella to hide his face.
Garrett’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Who paid you to disappear?”
Mave swallowed hard.
The phone shook in her hand.
And the little girl quietly whispered a word no one in the crowd was prepared to hear.
