Chapter 6 - The Man Beneath the Umbrella

Warren Ashford stopped breathing.

The crowd followed Posie’s small pointing finger.

The powerful businessman lowered his umbrella.

“That child is confused.”

Posie buried her face against Mave.

Mave’s fear turned to fury.

“You went near her preschool?”

“I have never seen that girl before.”

Posie peeked over Mave’s shoulder.

“You gave Miss Amy the blue envelope.”

Warren’s face tightened.

Garrett took one slow step toward him.

“What envelope?”

A security guard moved between them.

Garrett didn’t raise his voice.

“Move.”

The guard hesitated, then stepped aside.

Coraline rushed forward, gathering her soaked wedding skirt.

“This is insane. A child repeats things. Mave could have trained her.”

Garrett turned on her.

“You knew her name.”

Coraline froze.

Garrett had never said Posie’s name aloud.

Neither had Mave.

Phones rose higher beneath the umbrellas.

Coraline’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.

Mave held up her phone.

“The recording explains what they did.”

She pressed play.

For two seconds, Evelyn’s voice came through clearly.

“You were supposed to disappear permanently.”

Then the audio cut into static.

The screen went black.

Mave stared at it.

“No.”

She pressed the button again.

Nothing.

Coraline’s panic faded.

A faint smile returned.

“You brought a damaged phone into the rain.”

Mave looked toward the venue entrance.

“The file was backed up.”

“Where?”

“With Daniel.”

Garrett’s face changed.

“Daniel was hit by a car this morning.”

Mave went still.

Coraline looked toward her father.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But Garrett saw it.

So did one of the wedding guests—a retired federal judge who had known Thomas Hail for thirty years.

Judge Miriam Cole stepped out from under her umbrella.

“Mr. Ashford,” she said, “was your security company operating a black SUV near Lexington Avenue this morning?”

Warren’s expression hardened.

“You should be careful about accusations.”

Miriam held up her phone.

“I asked a question.”

Before Warren could answer, Garrett’s phone rang.

The call came from Daniel’s hospital.

Garrett answered on speaker.

A weak voice filled the rain.

“Don’t let them take Mave’s phone.”

Then the line went dead.

👉 Daniel had survived the crash—and his warning revealed that someone was about to make another move.
