Chapter 11 - The File Thomas Left Behind

Daniel’s assistant placed the evidence case on the hood of a police car.

The federal investigator introduced herself as Special Agent Elena Brooks.

“Mr. Reece contacted our office three days ago regarding suspected financial fraud, witness intimidation, medical record tampering, and interstate surveillance.”

Warren’s confidence faltered.

“Based on what?”

Agent Brooks opened the case.

“Based on documents assembled by Thomas Hail.”

Garrett stared at his father’s handwriting across the first folder.

Thomas had identified payments from Hail Holdings to a shell corporation controlled by Warren’s security company.

Other records showed money sent to the administrator of Mave’s prenatal clinic.

There were invoices for surveillance near Mave’s apartment, workplace, hospital, and eventually Posie’s preschool.

Mave covered her mouth.

“They watched us for four years.”

Agent Brooks nodded.

“Mr. Hail believed the surveillance continued after the original separation.”

Garrett turned toward Evelyn.

“You knew they were watching my daughter?”

Evelyn looked away.

Coraline answered for her.

“She said it was necessary.”

“To protect whom?”

“The family.”

Garrett’s voice shook.

“Posie is the family.”

Agent Brooks removed another document.

It was an email Warren had sent to Evelyn four years earlier.

The subject line read: Removal Complete.

The message described Mave as “relocated,” Garrett as “contained,” and the Ashford-Hail marriage agreement as “back on schedule.”

Warren stepped toward the case.

“My attorneys will address the authenticity.”

“You can address it during questioning,” Agent Brooks said.

Detective Sloan quietly moved away from Warren.

Judge Cole noticed.

“So much for old friendships.”

Garrett searched through the folder.

Near the bottom was a handwritten letter from Thomas.

Garrett unfolded it.

His father had written:

Son, if you are reading this, I failed to stop them in time. Mave did not leave you willingly. Find her. Protect the child. Trust neither family name more than the truth.

Garrett’s vision blurred.

He handed the letter to Mave.

She read it while Posie rested against her shoulder.

For the first time, Mave allowed herself to cry.

Then Agent Brooks lifted one final envelope.

“This was sealed separately.”

Garrett’s name was written across it.

Below his name were four words:
