Chapter 14 - The Empire Built on Blackmail

Coraline’s confession came fast now.
Years earlier, Warren had quietly bought debt connected to the Hail development.
He delayed permits through political contacts, pressured lenders, and triggered penalties designed to push the project toward collapse.
Then he offered Evelyn a rescue.
The price was Garrett’s marriage to Coraline and future control of both companies.
“My father didn’t save the Hails,” Coraline said. “He trapped them.”
Warren struggled against the officers holding him.
“You spoiled, ungrateful child.”
Coraline stared at him.
“You told me Garrett would love me once Mave was gone.”
“You knew exactly what this arrangement was.”
“I knew it was arranged. I didn’t know you were threatening a pregnant woman.”
Mave’s gaze hardened.
“You visited my daughter’s school.”
Coraline’s shame surfaced.
“My father ordered me to frighten you.”
“And you did.”
“Yes.”
No excuse followed.
That mattered.
Agent Brooks received confirmation that Daniel’s collision had not been accidental. Traffic cameras showed the Ashford security SUV forcing his car through a red light.
The driver had been arrested.
Messages recovered from his phone included instructions from Warren’s head of security to retrieve Thomas’s file before Daniel reached federal authorities.
Warren’s remaining confidence disappeared.
Officers placed him under arrest.
Coraline was also taken into custody for witness intimidation, conspiracy, and her role in the preschool threat.
Before entering the police car, she looked at Garrett.
“I did love you.”
Garrett’s expression remained empty.
“You loved winning.”
Coraline lowered her head.
The woman who had arrived in a designer gown expecting photographers to celebrate her marriage left with rainwater staining the hem and cameras documenting her downfall.
Evelyn was charged separately.
Her attorneys fought aggressively, but Thomas’s documents, Mave’s recordings, the financial transfers, and Coraline’s public confession supported one another.
Months later, Warren accepted a lengthy federal sentence.
Evelyn lost her authority within Hail Holdings and pleaded guilty to charges involving falsified records and coercion.
Coraline received a reduced sentence after cooperating, but she lost the inheritance and social position she had tried to secure.
Garrett became temporary chairman of Hail Holdings.
His first decision shocked the board.
He voted to sell the development that had caused the conspiracy.
His second decision shocked them more.
He placed the proceeds into compensation funds for employees, legal costs for victims of corporate coercion, and Posie’s protected trust.
But there was one decision he refused to make in a boardroom.

He went to Mave’s small Pennsylvania home alone.
👉 Garrett had won the legal battle, but Mave still had to decide whether he deserved a place in the life they rebuilt without him.
