Chapter 12 - The Granddaughter Clause

Garrett opened the envelope with trembling hands.
Inside was an amendment to Thomas Hail’s family trust.
It had been signed six months before his death and witnessed by Judge Miriam Cole.
The amendment stated that any biological grandchild wrongfully concealed through fraud or coercion would receive immediate protection through an independent trust.
More importantly, any Hail executive found to have participated in concealing that child would lose all voting authority within the family company.
Garrett looked at Evelyn.
Her face went white.
“You knew about this amendment.”
“I knew your father had become irrational.”
“He protected the granddaughter you helped erase.”
The amendment required a verified paternity test before the trust could activate.
Agent Brooks produced a sealed hospital kit.
“Mr. Reece anticipated that issue.”
Garrett turned to Mave.
“You do not have to agree today.”
Mave looked down at Posie.
“I want the truth documented where nobody can alter it again.”
A licensed medical technician collected cheek swabs inside the venue’s private medical room while Agent Brooks maintained custody.
Coraline sat beneath the awning in her soaked wedding gown.
No guests comforted her.
Evelyn tried calling attorneys.
Warren was separated from both women and questioned near a police vehicle.
Garrett stayed beside Mave and Posie.
He did not ask to hold the child.
He did not call himself her father again.
He simply offered Posie his dry suit jacket.
She stared at him for a long moment.
Then she reached for the white boutonniere he had picked up from the street.
“Flower broken,” she said.
Garrett swallowed.
“So is a lot of today.”
Posie placed the damaged flower in his palm.
“You fix it.”
Mave looked away, fighting tears.
Garrett crouched beside her.
“I don’t know how to repair what they took from us.”
“You can’t repair four years.”
“I know.”
“But you can decide what kind of man you’ll be tomorrow.”
Before he could answer, Agent Brooks returned.
“The preliminary result is available.”
Everyone stood.
The technician handed her the sealed report.
Agent Brooks read it once.
Then she looked directly at Garrett.
“Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.”
Posie was his daughter.
Coraline made a strangled sound.
But Mave was watching Evelyn.

Garrett’s mother was not surprised.
