Chapter 10 - THE COMPETENCY HEARING

Helen could no longer hide Emma.
So she tried to take me through the law.
Judge Samuel Mercer scheduled an emergency competency hearing the next morning.
Helen claimed I kidnapped Emma from her lawful guardian while experiencing a psychotic episode.
She submitted years of medical records.
All forged.
Rebecca objected to the judge.
He refused to recuse himself.
The hearing began under federal observation.
I sat beside Emma.
Luke sat behind the defense table in custody.
Robert appeared by video from protective detention.
Helen entered wearing her patterned sweater and glasses.
She looked like a frightened grandmother.
That was her greatest weapon.
She never looked like the monster in the room.
Her lawyer played clips from the dining-room camera showing me throwing the tissue box through the window and shouting about poison.
The footage began after Helen grabbed my jaw.
The earlier portion was missing.
Rebecca produced the hidden camera recovered from the porch.
Technicians restored the deleted opening.
The courtroom watched Helen force the mug toward my mouth.
Robert restrained me.
Luke held me down.
Then the tablet fell from the shattered cup.
A toxicologist testified that L-417 was a memory-inhibiting sedative dangerous when mixed with my prescribed heart medication.
Helen’s face remained calm.
“She requested it.”
Rebecca displayed pharmacy records proving the prescriptions were ordered before I met Luke.
Then Maria testified.
Then Robert.
Then Claire.
Each person revealed another layer.
Judge Mercer tried to exclude the lake-house files.
A federal marshal entered and handed him an arrest warrant.
The judge had accepted payments from Helen to seal disappearances.
He was removed from the bench.
A replacement judge continued the hearing.
Before the ruling, Helen stood.
“You’re destroying a family over the words of a sick woman.”
Emma rose beside me.
“No.”
Her voice shook, but she continued.
“You destroyed it every time you made us forget.”
The judge granted me temporary custody.
Helen’s legal control ended.
But as marshals approached her, every phone in the courtroom buzzed.
A video appeared.
Helen stood in another room wearing different clothes.

The woman before us was Claire in a wig and glasses.
The real Helen had never entered the courthouse.
