Chapter 7 - THE RETREAT

Federal agents raided the retreat before sunrise.
They found Robert tied inside a shed.
Claire was unconscious in a hallway.
Dr. Vale’s medical bag sat open beside an empty bedroom.
Emma and Helen were gone.
Robert finally broke.
He said Helen planned to take Emma across the border using forged documents. Dr. Vale would declare the girl medically unstable and sedate her during travel.
Robert had tried to stop them.
Helen attacked him with a fireplace tool and ordered Claire to drive.
Claire refused.
For the first time, Helen’s family had turned against her.
Robert provided the location of a private airstrip.
Agents arrived twenty minutes too late.
A small plane had already departed.
The flight plan listed Canada.
But the pilot’s phone pinged south of the airstrip.
The plane had landed on an abandoned highway.
Helen switched vehicles.
Rebecca questioned Robert in front of a federal prosecutor.
He admitted helping restrain me during the mug incident and during the first lake-house confinement.
He also admitted cutting my father’s brake line.
Helen ordered it.
Robert obeyed.
The confession did not bring relief.
It confirmed that my father died trying to save me.
Robert agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
Then an officer entered with news.
Maria Chen had been found alive in a motel room.
She had escaped Dr. Vale by jumping from his car.
Maria brought a flash drive containing original patient records.
Among them was Emma’s birth certificate.
Luke was listed as the father.
But a second report showed he was not.
The biological father was Dr. Marcus Vale.

My first pregnancy had not resulted from Luke.
It had resulted from a medical procedure I never consented to.
