Chapter 11 - HELEN’S FINAL HOUSE

Claire collapsed before the marshals reached her.
She had been threatened into impersonating Helen.
Her son, a six-year-old boy I did not know existed, had been taken.
Helen now controlled two children.
Emma told us about a property called Final House.
Helen used the phrase whenever someone “failed tradition.”
Luke knew the location.
An abandoned family mansion near the river.
Federal teams moved immediately.
Inside, they found Claire’s son locked in an upstairs room.
He was frightened but unharmed.
Helen had already left.
On the dining-room table sat twelve ceramic mugs.
Each was labeled with a woman’s name.
Mine.
Robert’s first wife.
Six Mercer wives.
Three teenage mothers from the church.
One mug said EMMA.
The last said HELEN.
Beside Helen’s mug was a handwritten note.
Every family needs one person willing to carry the sin.
She wanted to be remembered as a martyr.
But the house contained something more valuable than a confession.
A wall safe held original recordings of every staged breakdown and forced signature.
Helen recorded everything because she trusted no one.
The files implicated doctors, judges, pharmacists, lawyers, and social workers.
The network was national.
Rebecca transferred copies to federal prosecutors.
Then a live file opened automatically.
Helen appeared on-screen inside a moving vehicle.
She held a small bottle.
“You wanted the truth, Natalie.”
She smiled.
“Come to the lake house alone, and I will tell you why your mother helped us.”
My mother had been silent throughout the investigation.
May you like
Now I understood why.
She had known.
