Chapter 8 - THE DOCTOR’S CHILD

Dr. Vale had used his own genetic material while I was sedated at twenty-three.
He called it a fertility treatment.
I called it assault.
Luke knew after Emma’s birth.
Helen used the secret to control both men.
If Vale resisted, she would expose him.
If Luke resisted, she would reveal he collected insurance money after declaring me dead.
Every person in that family became both criminal and prisoner.
But Emma was innocent.
Rebecca obtained federal trafficking charges, kidnapping warrants, and an alert for Helen and Vale.
Luke asked to cooperate.
He offered access to Helen’s hidden accounts and safe houses.
I wanted him punished.
I also needed my daughter found.
He gave Ortiz a code phrase Helen used when changing locations.
“Family supper.”
Investigators searched recent messages.
A burner phone had texted those words to a number registered near a former Mercer estate in Tennessee.
The property contained an abandoned boarding school.
Police surrounded it.
Inside, they found medication, fake passports, and children’s clothing.
No Helen.
No Emma.
One classroom wall held photographs of women labeled FAILURE, COMPLIANT, and RECOVERED.
My picture appeared beneath FAILURE.
Emma’s appeared beneath IN PROGRESS.
A camera in the room was still transmitting.
Ortiz traced the signal to a motel sixty miles away.
We arrived to find Dr. Vale dead from an apparent overdose.
Beside him was a written confession accepting responsibility for everything.
It was too perfect.
Helen had created a dead villain to absorb the case.
On the motel mirror, Emma had written a message in soap.
