Helen called her crimes tradition because that word made obedience sound honorable.
Her family had controlled marriages, money, medical decisions, and children for generations.
The Mercer women were expected to produce heirs.
The Mercer men were expected to protect the name.
Anyone who resisted became “unstable.”
Ortiz found six women in the family who had been institutionalized after accusing their husbands of abuse or fraud.
Three died in private clinics connected to Dr. Vale.
One was Robert’s first wife.
Helen told everyone she abandoned the family.
She had actually died after signing over property.
The mug was not an isolated act.
It was a ritual of control.
Medication dissolved in coffee.
A recorded argument.
A psychiatric report.
A judge’s signature.
Then the woman disappeared legally.
Ethan hired attorney Rebecca Sloan, a former prosecutor specializing in guardianship fraud.
Rebecca immediately filed to block Luke from controlling my finances or medical care.
Judge Samuel Mercer denied the motion.
He cited my “history of mental illness.”
That history had been created by Helen.
Rebecca requested the original clinical records.
Dr. Vale’s office claimed they burned in a fire.
Then a receptionist named Maria Chen contacted us secretly.
She had saved copies after noticing altered dates and dead patients still receiving prescriptions.
Maria agreed to meet at a diner.
She never arrived.
Her car was found beside the highway.
The driver’s door was open.
Her purse remained inside.
Her phone contained one unsent photograph.
It showed a wall of patient files in Dr. Vale’s private storage room.
My name appeared on twelve folders.
Emma’s name appeared on one.
The label read:
