Chapter 6 - LENORA

Lenora had faked her death ten years earlier after federal auditors began investigating Walker & Vale.

She transferred control to Samuel and Caleb, then operated through trusts and false identities.

Her “death” allowed her to avoid subpoenas while maintaining influence.

She had planned every stage of my elimination.

The metal box was not intended to help us.

It was bait.

Lenora wanted Anna to find it.

She wanted the old cases reopened just enough to pressure Caleb.

Why would she attack her own son?

Sarah explained the family structure.

Lenora controlled through competition.

When one child became too powerful, she weakened them using another.

Caleb had begun moving assets away from her trusts.

My forged property transfer would give him independent control over Walker Development.

Lenora wanted him exposed before he could escape her.

She used my suffering to discipline him.

Neither cared whether I survived.

They were fighting over ownership.

I was the battlefield.

Ortiz traced Lenora to a luxury retirement residence under the name Eleanor Voss.

Agents arrived.

The room was empty.

Inside were live camera feeds from my hospital, Caleb’s office, Anna’s apartment, and Sarah’s farmhouse.

Lenora watched all of us.

A wall calendar marked Friday.

My scheduled death.

Beside it was another entry.

CALEB — CORRECTION.

Lenora planned to remove him after me.

Then hospital administrators announced Dr. Marcus Hale had disappeared.

His office computer was wiped.

The security access system showed he entered the orthopedic wing fifteen minutes earlier.

Priya checked my door.

Locked.

Footsteps stopped outside.

A keycard beeped.

The handle turned.

Anna moved between me and the door.

Dr. Reed activated the alarm.

The door opened.

Marcus Hale entered holding a syringe and a gun.

He pointed both toward me.

“Lenora wants the original plan completed.”

Anna stepped forward.

He raised the gun.

Then Caleb entered behind him and struck him with a fire extinguisher.

Hale collapsed.

Caleb kicked the syringe away.

For one impossible moment, my husband appeared to have saved me.

Then he looked at Anna.

“Move.”

May you like

He had not come to rescue me.

He had come to take me before his mother could kill us both.
