Chapter 9 - CLAIRE

Our mother gave birth to twins.
Lenora arranged the hospital adoption through Walker & Vale.
My parents were told only one child survived.
They adopted Anna.
Claire remained with Lenora.
She was raised as a replacement identity—a person who could sign documents, enter buildings, and frame Anna if necessary.
The camera footage was one example.
Claire had removed my archive using Anna’s face.
Sarah had seen her only twice as a child.
Lenora called her “the useful one.”
Claire contacted us voluntarily after the vault break-in.
She sent a live video.
She sat inside a dark room with my file on the table.
“I’m tired of being someone else.”
Her voice sounded almost exactly like Anna’s.
Lenora had ordered her to destroy the documents.
Instead, she wanted protection.
Rebecca Sloan negotiated a surrender location.
Claire arrived wearing Anna’s coat and carrying the full archive.
When the sisters faced each other, neither moved.
Anna looked at a version of herself shaped by another life.
Claire looked at the person she had been trained to replace.
“I hated you,” Claire said.
“I didn’t know you existed.”
“That made it worse.”
Claire turned over the file.
It contained Caleb’s full plan, Lenora’s correction order, and Samuel’s medical instructions.
It also contained my mother’s toxicology report.
She had been poisoned.
Samuel administered the drug.
Lenora ordered it.
Caleb knew afterward and remained silent.
Claire had recorded Lenora discussing the death.
The evidence could convict her.
But Claire carried another secret.
She was not only Anna’s twin.
She was Caleb’s wife.
Lenora forced a legal marriage under a false identity six years earlier to maintain control over him.
Caleb married me while still legally married to Claire.
My marriage was invalid.
The property transfers, insurance policies, and spousal authority built on fraud.
For the first time, the law worked in my favor before the courtroom even began.
Then Claire received a message from Caleb.
COME HOME OR REBECCA DIES TONIGHT.
Attached was a live photograph of my hospital bed.

Taken from inside the room.
Someone stood behind my curtain.
