Chapter 7 - THE ESCAPE ATTEMPT
Caleb locked the room and pointed Hale’s gun toward the door.
He said Lenora had ordered Hale to kill me and frame Dr. Reed.
He claimed everything changed after he discovered his mother was alive.
“You expect me to trust you?”
“No.”
At least that answer was honest.
“I expect you to understand that she’ll kill us both.”
“You tried first.”
His eyes moved toward my casts.
“I lost control.”
“You pushed me down the stairs.”
“I was angry.”
“You planned my death.”
His silence lasted too long.
He had prepared the hospital embolism before the confrontation.
The staircase was supposed to create the medical condition that made the later death believable.
It had all been intentional.
Caleb wanted me to sign over the company because my father had left me controlling shares in Walker Development after merging our businesses.
He could not remove me legally.
So he built a story around instability, injury, and death.
Lenora objected only because the shares would go to him instead of her trust.
Caleb offered the location of Lenora’s private archive if I left with him.
Anna laughed.
“You think she can walk?”
He had arranged a medical transport van.
Two corrupt hospital employees waited downstairs.
He intended to move me under emergency discharge papers.
Priya activated the sprinkler alarm from the nurses’ station.
The corridor filled with staff and security.
Caleb hesitated.
Anna rushed him.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Security officers forced the door.
Caleb escaped through the bathroom maintenance panel.
He knew hospital construction plans from the foundation project.
Police sealed the building.
They found the transport van empty.
Inside was a wheelchair, restraints, and a death certificate carrying my name.
Time of death had been left blank.
The van’s navigation history led to an abandoned Walker rehabilitation center outside the city.
Federal agents searched it.
They found treatment rooms, fake records, and personal belongings from all four women.
Melissa’s necklace.
Caroline’s wedding dress.
Julia’s journal.
My missing phone.
The center had been used to stage recovery before each death.
Inside a locked cabinet was an original letter from Melissa.
She wrote that Caleb was not acting alone.
Lenora chose the women.
Samuel prepared the documents.
But another person administered the final injuries.
Caleb’s father, Richard Walker.
He had supposedly died fifteen years earlier.
