Chapter 1 - The Door I Had To Break Through

I saw the baseball bat hit the porch before I saw my daughter.

Julian Thorne slammed it down between us, blocking the entrance to the mansion like he was guarding a prison.

“She needed discipline.”

Those words froze me for half a second.

Not because I didn’t understand them.

Because I did.

I understood exactly what kind of person says something like that.

I had spent years believing Julian was arrogant.

Difficult.

Self-centered.

But standing there outside that mansion, holding a weapon like he had nothing to fear, I realized I had underestimated him.

“Where’s my daughter?”

My voice was calm.

That seemed to bother him more than anger would have.

Julian rested the bat on his shoulder and smiled.

“You should leave.”

I stepped closer.

“I asked where Audrey is.”

Behind him, the mansion stood silent.

Too silent.

Then movement caught my eye.

An upstairs curtain flew open.

A hand slammed against the window.

Audrey.

My daughter.

Her bruised hand pressed against the glass for only a second.

Her white dress was torn.

Her face was terrified.

Then someone grabbed her and pulled her away.

I felt something inside me snap.

Julian saw my expression.

Instead of fear, he smiled.

That smile told me he thought he was untouchable.

So I pulled out my phone.

Started recording.

His smile remained.

“Recording me?” he mocked.

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t recording for him.

I was recording for everyone who would see what happened next.

Then Arthur Thorne stepped beside him.

Julian’s wealthy father.

The man who had protected his son for years.

“Leave before you regret it.”

I looked at both of them.

Then I pressed send.

A message.

A video.

A location.

Everything.

Julian noticed.

His smile slowly disappeared.

And in the distance, I heard it.

May you like

Sirens.
