Julian stared at my phone.
Not the way an innocent man looks at evidence.
The way a guilty man looks at a locked door.
“What did you send?”
I slipped the phone back into my pocket.
“Something you can’t erase.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“You don’t understand this family.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I glanced toward the upstairs window.
“I understand enough.”
For years, Audrey tried to convince me something was wrong.
She told me Julian changed after marriage.
She told me his family controlled everything.
But every time she called, she softened the truth.
Because she didn’t want me to worry.
Because she was protecting me.
And I let her.
That was my mistake.
A police dispatcher had already received the video.
A neighbor had already heard the shouting.
The mansion was no longer private.
Julian lowered the bat.
Not because he became calmer.
Because he became careful.
“You’re making a mistake, Daniel.”
I stepped closer.
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“I made my mistake when I believed you.”
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
From Audrey.
Three words.
“Don’t trust them.”
I looked back at the mansion.
Because if Audrey was warning me from inside that house…
