Chapter 3 - The Voice Behind The Door

I didn’t rush inside.
That was what Julian wanted.
Angry.
Careless.
Easy to accuse.
Instead, I waited.
The police were coming.
Witnesses were watching.
For the first time, the Thorne family couldn’t control the room.
Then Miriam appeared at the doorway.
Elegant.
Calm.
Almost kind.
That scared me more than Julian’s anger.
“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding.”
I looked at her.
“My daughter’s bruised upstairs.”
Her expression barely changed.
“Marriage is complicated.”
Those words made my hands tighten.
Complicated.
That was the word people used when they wanted to excuse cruelty.
Then I noticed something.
Miriam wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at Julian.
Waiting for his reaction.
That’s when I understood.
Julian wasn’t acting alone.
The police sirens grew louder.
Arthur stepped backward.
Julian looked toward the road.
His confidence was gone.
But before the officers arrived, he leaned toward me.
“You think Audrey told you everything?”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
He smiled.
