Chapter 2 - The Husband Who Came Home Too Late

Julian walked into the house three days later wearing expensive sunglasses and carrying a designer suitcase.

Not a funeral suit.

Not a face filled with regret.

A vacation face.

Like Evelyn’s death had been an inconvenience interrupting his trip.

I was sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by papers.

The hospital bills.

The funeral documents.

And the divorce papers I had printed that morning.

Julian stopped when he saw them.

“You’re serious?”

I looked at him.

“You missed your mother’s last moments.”

He dropped his suitcase.

“She was already sick.”

“She asked for you.”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Guilt.

Then anger replaced it.

“You’re blaming me?”

“No.”

I touched the silver key inside my pocket.

“I’m finally seeing you.”

Julian laughed.

“You think leaving me changes anything?”

He walked closer.

“You have no idea what you’re about to lose.”

That sentence bothered me.

Not because it sounded like a threat.

Because it sounded prepared.

Later that night, I opened Evelyn’s old jewelry box.

I searched everywhere for something matching the key.

Nothing.

No note.

No explanation.

Only one small scratch on the key.

A number.

I didn’t know what it meant.

But I knew one thing.

Evelyn had not given it to me by accident.
