Chapter 3 - The Number Hidden In Silver

The next morning, I returned to Evelyn’s house.
Julian hated that idea.
“You don’t need to go through her things.”
I looked at him.
“She was my family too.”
He smiled coldly.
“Was she?”
That hurt more than I expected.
Because Evelyn had always treated me like a daughter.
She was the only person in Julian’s family who saw through him.
Inside her bedroom, everything looked untouched.
Her favorite chair.
Her old books.
Her framed photographs.
Then I noticed something.
A small wooden cabinet near the closet.
The lock was different.
Old.
Worn.
I pulled out the silver key.
It fit perfectly.
Inside was a small envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not Julian’s.
Mine.
My hands started shaking.
I opened it slowly.
Inside was one sentence.
“Clarissa, if you are reading this, Julian has already chosen himself.”
I froze.
Because Evelyn knew.
She knew her son.
And she knew something was coming.
Then I heard the front door close.
Julian was home.
