Chapter 4 - MARGARET’S HOUSE

Margaret lived under the name Evelyn Moore on a private estate two counties away.

Federal agents arrived before dawn.

The house was empty.

A child’s bedroom contained clothes, drawings, and medication.

Lily’s bed remained warm.

Margaret had fled minutes earlier.

Security footage showed her leaving with Dr. Samuel Miller and a sleeping child.

The estate’s basement mirrored Jason’s.

Washer.

Dryer.

Laundry sink.

Concrete floor.

A steel ring installed in the wall.

Margaret had taught him everything.

Investigators found files for seven women.

Each had been connected to a Miller man.

Each had carried a pregnancy.

Each had been labeled unstable after trying to leave.

Two were dead.

Three were missing.

One was in psychiatric custody.

I was number seven.

Sarah Grant, the woman in psychiatric custody, had lived there for eleven years under another name.

Ortiz obtained her release.

Sarah testified that Margaret used pregnancy as leverage.

Women were implanted with embryos tied to wealthy families or medical studies. Jason and his cousins acted as romantic partners, caregivers, and enforcers.

Abuse created dependence.

Dependence created legal control.

Legal control allowed them to take the babies.

Sarah had given birth to a boy named Noah.

Margaret told her he died.

Records showed he lived in a private boarding facility.

The operation involved doctors, attorneys, judges, and foster agencies.

My case was only one branch.

Rebecca Sloan secured federal trafficking warrants.

Then Margaret sent me a video.

She sat beside Lily inside a moving vehicle.

My daughter looked pale but awake.

Margaret held a silver syringe.

“Withdraw your statement,” she said, “or Lily misses her medication.”

I pressed both hands over my stomach.

“What do you want?”

“Jason released.”

“No.”

“You would sacrifice one daughter to punish her father?”

“He is not her father.”

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

“Biology is not the only ownership that matters.”

That sentence revealed the entire system.

She believed raising, controlling, and medicating a child transformed theft into motherhood.

Before ending the call, Lily looked toward the camera.

“Mommy?”

May you like

One word.

The first she had ever spoken to me.
