Chapter 9 - THE EXCHANGE

No one allowed me near the airstrip.

I agreed.

My daughters needed a living mother, not a dramatic sacrifice.

Federal agents created a decoy transport.

Dr. Reed prepared a medical mannequin matching my pregnant shape.

Rebecca Miller contacted Andrew and convinced him Margaret intended to abandon him after the exchange.

He turned on the aircraft tracker.

The plane sat inside a private hangar in Montana.

Tactical teams entered from three directions.

Margaret held Lily beside the open aircraft door.

Andrew stood at the controls.

Samuel Miller waited with surgical equipment.

Margaret demanded visual confirmation of me.

Agents transmitted a prerecorded image.

She noticed the delay.

“Emily would never stand that calmly.”

Even in hiding, she knew fear.

Andrew shut down the plane’s systems.

Margaret turned on him.

“You belong to this family because I made you useful.”

He opened the cockpit door.

“No. You made me afraid.”

Agents moved.

Samuel reached for Lily.

Andrew blocked him.

Margaret pulled a syringe.

Rebecca tackled her before she reached the child.

No shots.

No final speech.

Only people choosing not to obey.

Lily was rescued.

When I saw her at the hospital, she stared at me.

I expected tears.

Instead, she hid behind Dr. Reed.

I was a stranger.

I did not force an embrace.

“My name is Emily.”

She looked toward my belly.

“Is the baby mine?”

“No.”

The question revealed everything Margaret taught her.

Bodies and children were possessions exchanged for survival.

“She is your sister,” I said. “She belongs to herself.”

Lily considered that.

Then she touched one of my bruises.

“Did Grandma do that?”

“Jason did.”

“Did she tell him?”

May you like

“Yes.”

Lily whispered, “She tells everybody.”
