Chapter 10 - Range Nineteen

At 11:58 p.m., Claire entered Range Nineteen carrying the coin.

A concealed tactical team surrounded the abandoned structure.

Rourke monitored from a command vehicle.

Claire wore body armor beneath a dark field jacket.

Her bruises from the training yard still burned.

She walked alone into the floodlit center lane.

“Voss!”

A speaker crackled overhead.

“Place the coin on the table.”

A metal table stood fifty feet ahead.

Claire obeyed.

“Release my mother and Paul Barrett.”

“You have no authority here.”

“I have the archive.”

Silence.

Then Voss appeared behind reinforced glass in the observation booth.

He looked older than his official photographs.

Calmer too.

“That archive should have remained buried.”

“You knew my father survived.”

“He compromised an operation.”

“He exposed your crime.”

Voss’s expression hardened.

“Young officers always confuse incomplete facts with truth.”

A side door opened.

Paul Barrett stumbled forward with his hands bound.

Claire’s mother followed, frightened but uninjured.

A masked guard stood behind them.

Voss ordered Claire to surrender the archive.

She told him copies had already been transmitted.

He did not believe her.

Then Rourke’s voice came through Claire’s hidden earpiece.

“We have visual. Hold.”

Voss noticed Claire’s slight reaction.

He pressed a switch.

Red laser dots appeared across her chest.

More than one.

Claire remained still.

The system used remote training simulators.

No live rounds.

But Voss expected her to panic.

He had used the same fear tactic at the training yard.

The first laser had never come from a sniper.

It came from equipment hidden under Voss’s control.

Paul Barrett had planted the firing position after being threatened.

Voss wanted Danner frightened enough to destroy evidence.

Claire looked toward the observation booth.

“You built the first laser.”

Voss smiled.

“You followed it exactly where I needed you.”

The masked guard moved toward Claire’s mother.

Paul suddenly drove his shoulder into him.

Both men fell.

Claire moved.

She crossed the distance in seconds, ignoring the pain in her leg.

She pulled her mother behind the table.

The tactical team entered from three sides.

Voss ran from the booth.

Rourke intercepted him at the rear corridor.

No dramatic gunfire.

No chaos.

Only doors opening, commands shouted, and men who believed they controlled the truth discovering that every exit was covered.

Voss was restrained.

Then Paul looked at Claire and whispered:

“Your father made it out of Gray Valley.”

👉 Paul had hidden one final fact for twelve years: Daniel Rowan survived the mission and returned to the United States under another name.
