Chapter 9 - The Coordinates Inside the Coin
The coordinates led to a remote point in Georgia, not overseas.
A wooded section of land bordering an old military communications facility.
The site had been abandoned for nearly fifteen years.
Longer than Daniel had been officially dead.
Investigators searched the area before the midnight meeting.
Beneath a collapsed antenna platform, they found a sealed metal container.
Inside were microfilm copies of mission logs, audio recordings, and Daniel’s handwritten report.
He had hidden them before deploying.
Daniel had suspected intelligence was being manipulated.
His recordings identified three men.
Danner.
Voss.
And a defense contractor named Richard Kane.
Kane’s company profited from the airstrike planned for Gray Valley.
If the strike occurred as originally ordered, it would destroy evidence that Kane had been secretly selling weapons to both sides.
Daniel discovered the operation.
He intended to expose it after extraction.
Voss changed the mission record.
Danner changed the extraction grid.
Kane’s hired men attacked the team.
Paul Barrett witnessed Danner entering the false coordinates.
Another soldier died during the withdrawal.
Daniel stayed behind, injured but alive.
A surveillance aircraft later detected his emergency beacon.
Voss ordered the signal classified as enemy deception.
No rescue was sent.
Claire listened to her father’s voice on the recovered audio.
“If this reaches anyone, Voss changed the grid. Danner knows. Barrett saw him do it.”
Twelve years vanished for one second.
Claire was fourteen again, waiting for a body that never came home.
Rourke turned off the recording.
“This proves the report was falsified.”
“It doesn’t prove what happened after.”
“No.”
Claire looked at the final file.
Daniel recorded a second message nearly twenty-four hours later.
His breathing was weak.
“I’m moving north. Someone is tracking me from the ridge. If they find this, tell Claire I kept my promise.”
The recording ended.
No later message existed.
The sniper coin must have been recovered after Daniel left the site.
Danner claimed he found it among equipment.
That now seemed impossible.
Someone had encountered Daniel alive.
Then the midnight caller sent a photograph.
Claire’s mother sat inside Range Nineteen.
Paul Barrett sat beside her.
Both were alive.
Behind them stood Colonel Voss.
The distorted voice had belonged to Paul.
He had been forced to make the calls.
