Chapter 8 - The Call to Claire’s Mother

Claire called her mother from Rourke’s office.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Claire contacted the local police department near her mother’s home in Virginia.
Officers arrived within minutes.
The front door was open.
The house was empty.
No signs of forced entry.
A cup of coffee remained warm on the kitchen counter.
Claire’s mother’s phone lay beside it.
On the table was a photograph of Daniel in uniform.
The back contained a message:
HE SURVIVED LONGER THAN YOU WERE TOLD.
Claire stared at the image transmitted by police.
Her breathing became uneven.
Rourke placed a hand near her shoulder but did not touch her.
“Stay with the evidence.”
It was exactly what Daniel used to say.
Claire forced herself to focus.
Her mother had left voluntarily or been taken by someone she recognized.
The neighborhood camera showed a dark sedan arriving that morning.
A tall older man entered the house.
Claire’s mother opened the door without hesitation.
The image was blurry.
But his posture was military.
Luke Barrett saw the photograph.
“That looks like Colonel Voss.”
Investigators contacted Voss.
His attorney claimed he was traveling overseas.
Border records showed he had never left the country.
His consulting company owned the dark sedan.
A federal warrant followed.
Then the distorted caller contacted Claire directly.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
“Where is my mother?”
“Safe for now.”
“Who are you?”
“You already know.”
Claire looked at the sniper coin.
“Were you on the ridge?”
Silence.
“Did you see what happened to Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Is he alive?”
The caller breathed once.
Then said, “He was when Danner abandoned him.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Tell me where my mother is.”
“Bring the coin to Range Nineteen at midnight.”
Rourke shook his head immediately.
Claire kept the caller speaking.
“Why the coin?”
“It opens what your father hid.”
The line ended.
Range Nineteen had been closed for renovations.
It was isolated from the active training areas.
Rourke said the meeting was an obvious trap.
Claire agreed.
She also knew it was the first direct path to her mother.
Military and federal investigators prepared a controlled operation.
Claire would not go alone.
She placed the silver coin inside a transparent evidence pouch.
Then she noticed a narrow groove around its edge.
The coin could be opened.
Inside was a rolled strip of waterproof film no wider than a fingernail.
It contained six handwritten numbers.

👉 Daniel’s sniper coin was not a keepsake—it was a hidden key pointing to evidence he buried before the mission collapsed.
