Chapter 6 - Danner’s Version of the Mission
Danner agreed to speak only after being ordered by the installation commander.
He entered the interview room without the baton.
The absence made him look smaller.
Rourke placed the photograph of Daniel’s team on the table.
“Tell us what happened at Grid Seven.”
Danner sat back.
“Classified operation.”
“Your authority to hide behind that classification has been suspended.”
Danner looked toward Claire.
“Your father made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He broke position.”
“Why?”
“He thought he saw movement near the village.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
The admission came reluctantly.
Daniel’s team had been monitoring a weapons-transfer route.
A group of civilians unexpectedly entered the area.
Among them were children.
The mission commander ordered the team to remain concealed.
Then hostile fighters appeared behind the civilians.
Daniel believed an airstrike had been authorized on the entire zone.
He broke radio silence and warned command that civilians were present.
The strike was delayed.
The team’s position was exposed.
Danner blamed Daniel.
“He chose strangers over us.”
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“He prevented children from being killed.”
“He compromised the mission.”
“What happened next?”
Danner claimed the team moved toward extraction.
He entered the correct coordinates.
Then enemy fire separated them.
Daniel stayed behind to provide cover.
No one saw him again.
Rourke placed a copy of Daniel’s burned notebook on the table.
DANNER CHANGED THE GRID.
Danner stared at the words.
“That isn’t proof.”
“Why did you possess his coin?” Claire asked.
“I found it after the mission.”
“Where?”
“Among recovered equipment.”
“Why wasn’t it returned to my family?”
No answer.
Rourke asked why Danner targeted Claire during training.
Danner leaned forward.
“Because she is reckless like him.”
“She completed every task.”
“She questioned authority.”
Claire answered, “So did my father.”
Danner’s expression changed.
For the first time, hatred became visible.
“He destroyed my career.”
Daniel had filed a report before the mission accusing Danner of falsifying reconnaissance data.
The report vanished after Daniel disappeared.
Danner received a reprimand but remained in service.
He spent twelve years rebuilding his reputation.
Then Claire arrived carrying her father’s questions.
“You wanted me to quit,” she said.
“I wanted to see whether you were strong enough to carry his name.”
“You put illegal weight in my pack and threatened me with a baton.”
“You’re still standing.”
Claire looked at him coldly.
“That does not make abuse training.”
Then Rourke’s phone buzzed.
Search teams had located Paul Barrett’s truck near an abandoned hunting cabin.
Blood was found inside.
