Chapter 7 - The Map in Danner’s Locker

Military investigators searched Danner’s office, vehicle, and barracks locker.
Inside the locker, they found a folded topographic map.
One route was marked in red.
It led from Fort Moore to the abandoned hunting cabin where Paul’s truck was found.
Danner claimed the map belonged to an old training exercise.
The date printed at the bottom was from the current year.
Another mark identified the ridge overlooking the training yard.
Claire studied the map.
Two locations.
Paul’s truck.
The laser position.
Someone had planned both.
Investigators also recovered photographs of Claire during training.
Not official images.
Long-lens photographs taken from hidden positions.
One showed her entering the barracks.
Another showed her visiting an off-base storage unit.
The unit where she hid Daniel’s notebook.
Claire immediately called the facility.
The lock had been cut.
The notebook was gone.
Danner smiled when he heard.
“You built this conspiracy in your head.”
Rourke turned toward him.
“You knew what was stored there?”
Danner’s smile vanished.
Claire stepped closer.
“I never told you it was a notebook.”
Danner looked toward the investigators.
He had exposed himself.
But before they could detain him, the disposable phone rang again.
Rourke answered.
The distorted voice said, “Danner didn’t take Barrett.”
“Who did?”
“Ask about Colonel Voss.”
Claire knew the name.
Colonel Stephen Voss had signed Daniel’s death report twelve years earlier.
He was now retired.
He also chaired a private defense-consulting company with contracts at Fort Moore.
Rourke asked where Paul Barrett was.
The caller replied, “Still alive. Not for long.”
“Give us a location.”
“Danner has the key.”
The line disconnected.
Danner shook his head.
“I don’t know what that means.”
Investigators searched his key ring.
One key did not match his house, vehicle, office, or equipment lockers.
Stamped into the metal were two letters.
GV.
Claire remembered the mission records.
The operation’s unofficial name had been Gray Valley.
The key fit a locked storage cage beneath an old training warehouse.
Inside, investigators found restraints, disposable phones, and medical supplies.
No Paul.
But they also found recent photographs of Claire’s mother.
Someone had been watching her too.
Then Claire noticed an old wall calendar.
One date was circled.
Tomorrow.
Beside it were the words:

ROWAN FILE CLOSED.
👉 Whoever controlled Danner’s secret storage site planned to silence Claire within twenty-four hours—and her mother was already part of the threat.
