Chapter 13 - The Father Who Chose Distance

Claire did not run toward him.
Daniel did not ask her to.
They stood across the room like two soldiers waiting for the other to make the first move.
“You watched me,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
“You knew I believed you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury an empty casket.”
Pain crossed his face.
“Yes.”
Rourke quietly stepped outside.
Claire remained.
Daniel explained that Kane’s network had already targeted Claire’s mother once.
A staged traffic accident failed.
After that, Daniel believed any direct contact would place them in danger.
He sent coded warnings.
He trusted Paul to monitor them.
Then Paul’s drinking worsened.
The chain of protection weakened.
“Why didn’t you trust me when I became an officer?” Claire asked.
“Because you were exactly like me.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the answer. You would have hunted them.”
“I did anyway.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Then the expression disappeared.
“I saw what Danner was doing at Fort Moore.”
“You were there?”
“Not physically. Paul sent photographs.”
“Why didn’t you stop it?”
“I was preparing to expose Voss.”
Claire’s anger rose.
“You watched another man abuse your daughter because your operation mattered more?”
Daniel looked down.
The truth struck because it resembled the same failure he accused others of making.
Mission before people.
He had become what he once resisted.
“I told myself you could handle him.”
“I could.”
“That doesn’t mean you should have had to.”
Silence filled the room.
Daniel moved closer but stopped several feet away.
“I am sorry.”
Claire’s voice remained steady.
“Sorry is not twelve years.”
“No.”
“It is not birthdays.”
“No.”
“It is not Mom sleeping beside an empty uniform.”
“No.”
Daniel accepted every word.
He did not defend his medals, secrecy, or sacrifice.
That mattered.
Claire looked at his scar.
“What happens now?”
“Kane is still active.”
“You brought me here to recruit me?”
“No.”
“For once, I brought you here to give you a choice.”
Daniel handed her a sealed drive containing the complete evidence package.
She could walk away.
Or help investigators finish what he began.
Claire took the drive.
“I’ll help expose them.”
Daniel nodded.
“But not for you,” she added.
“For the soldiers they used. For the civilians they nearly killed. For Paul. For everyone who was ordered to stay silent.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with pride and regret.
Claire looked at him.

“And after that, you answer to us.”
👉 Claire agreed to finish the mission—but she refused to let duty become another excuse for her father to disappear.
