Chapter 10 - Melissa Had Built the Trap Herself

Melissa had helped design the startup’s secure payment infrastructure.
She claimed she discovered executives moving investor money through unauthorized accounts.
At first, she documented it.
Then she made her own mistake.
She took money too.
Not millions.
Enough.
She told herself it was compensation the company owed her.
That rationalization sounded painfully familiar.
Greg told himself he could take Sarah’s money because he would replace it.
Melissa told herself she could redirect company funds because she had earned them.
Both siblings turned theft into temporary borrowing inside their own minds.
Then the company began collapsing.
Melissa copied records.
Some protected her.
Others implicated her.
That was why she wanted one component destroyed and the others preserved.
She wasn’t a whistleblower.
She wasn’t simply a criminal mastermind either.
She was someone trying to expose a larger fraud while cutting her own name out of the evidence.
And she used Lily to do it.
Three earlier details finally aligned.
The storage unit contained old networking equipment Melissa used while working with the company.
Greg’s $84,000 investment gave him a reason to cooperate with her.
The black pouch contained evidence both of them believed could recover money or negotiate their way out.
Then there was the message threatening Rex.
Melissa denied sending it.
Investigators found no immediate proof she had.
That meant someone else involved in the failed company knew the drives were in play.
For the first time, the threat extended beyond my family’s terrible decisions.
I moved Sarah and the children temporarily.
Rex came too.
Lily loved that part.
She called it our “secret hotel mission.”
I let her.
Six-year-olds deserve harmless explanations when adults can safely give them.
Then she asked:
“Uncle Daniel?”
“Yeah?”
“Did Daddy know bugs were in my boot?”
“No.”
That was the truth as we understood it.
She thought for a moment.
“Did he know the bag was there?”
“Yes.”
“Did he put it there?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled.
“So Daddy started it.”
I had no gentle lie available.
“Yes.”
May you like
Lily leaned against Rex.
And I realized that whatever happened legally, Greg’s hardest consequence might be the moment his daughter became old enough to understand exactly what he had chosen.
