Chapter 12 - Greg Finally Told the Whole Truth
Months later, Greg requested another formal interview and changed his statement.
This time he stopped minimizing.
The truth was uglier than his earlier version.
Melissa had suggested hiding the drives somewhere unexpected.
Greg was the one who suggested Lily’s boot.
Not Melissa.
He had seen Lily’s new rain boots by the garage door.
He joked that nobody would search a six-year-old.
Then the joke became a plan.
He told Lily it was a secret-agent game.
He placed the pouch beside her ankle.
He sealed the boot because she kept trying to remove it.
Then he told her Sarah would get in trouble if anyone found the pouch.
That was how he kept her silent.
When Melissa arrived, she was horrified he had used Lily.
For approximately five minutes.
Then she decided to exploit the hiding place rather than remove the pouch.
She added the capsule and damaged component.
Two adults had each reached a moment when they could have stopped.
Neither did.
Greg left because he was supposed to arrange the next morning’s handoff.
Melissa remained behind.
By dawn, Lily was complaining of pain.
Melissa left anyway.
Greg returned.
Instead of removing the boot, he hoped they could complete the handoff first.
Then Lily fell in the garage and hurt her arm.
Sarah called me.
Everything unraveled.
When I finished reading Greg’s corrected statement, I felt no satisfaction.
Just exhaustion.
At least the truth no longer required us to assemble pieces around his lies.
Then Greg changed the apology letter.
The new version began:
Lily, I used you to hide something because I was afraid of consequences for what I had done. You were hurt because I chose my fear over your safety.
Sarah read it.
She still didn’t give it to Lily.
