Chapter 14 - The Yellow Boot Came Home

The evidence process eventually released several personal items.

Among them was the second yellow rain boot.

The untouched one.

Sarah wanted to throw it away immediately.

Lily saw it first.

She froze in the hallway.

I expected tears.

Instead she walked toward it.

“That’s the other one.”

“Yes.”

“Where’s the bad one?”

“Gone.”

The cut boot remained part of evidence and medical documentation.

Lily stared at its clean twin.

Then touched the rubber with one finger.

Sarah knelt beside her.

“We can get rid of it.”

Lily shook her head.

“I want Rex to smell it.”

I almost smiled.

“Why?”

“He knows when stuff is bad.”

Rex sniffed the boot.

Then lost interest and walked toward his water bowl.

Lily watched him.

“That one’s okay.”

“Yes.”

She picked it up.

For the first time in months, a yellow boot was simply a yellow boot.

Then Sarah received notice that Greg wanted future contact with Lily to be considered through appropriate therapeutic and legal channels.

Not immediately.

Not privately.

Not because he demanded parental rights without acknowledging what had happened.

His request included his corrected statement and apology.

Sarah asked me what I thought.

“It’s your decision.”

“And Lily’s.”

“When she’s ready.”

Sarah nodded.

She had changed too.

Months earlier, she wanted certainty.

Now she understood safety could coexist with unanswered questions.

That evening, Lily placed the clean yellow boot in the garage.

Not her bedroom.

Not the trash.

The garage.

Then she said:

“I don’t want to wear it.”

“You don’t have to.”

“Maybe when I’m seven.”

I smiled.

“Maybe.”

Her birthday was four months away.

For the first time, she was imagining a future in which something that terrified her might become ordinary again.
