Chapter 12 - Mark’s Consequence
Mark pleaded guilty to child neglect.
He avoided prison.
But he did not avoid consequence.
The court suspended his parental rights pending years of therapy, parenting education, and demonstrated accountability.
He was ordered to attend supervised visits only if the children’s therapists believed contact would help them.
For several months, Drew refused.
Lily asked about him once.
“Daddy coming?”
Peter answered honestly.
“Not today.”
“Why?”
“Because grown-ups have to prove they can be safe too.”
Mark wrote letters.
Peter did not give them to the children immediately.
He gave them to Grace and their therapist first.
Most early letters were apologies mixed with excuses.
I was working.
I trusted the wrong person.
I didn’t know.
The therapist returned them.
“Accountability without ‘but,’” she told him.
Months later, a new letter arrived.
Drew,
You tried to tell me without words.
You limped.
You became quiet.
You protected Lily.
I saw those things and chose easier answers.
Vanessa hurt you.
I failed to stop her.
That was my responsibility.
You do not have to forgive me.
I will keep doing the work whether you see me or not.
Drew read the letter twice.
Then folded it.
“Can I keep it?”
Peter nodded.
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
Six weeks later, Drew agreed to a supervised visit.
Mark entered the room slowly.
He did not reach for either child.
Lily hid behind Peter.
Drew stared at his father.
Mark knelt.
“I’m sorry.”
Drew asked one question.
“Why didn’t you open the door?”
Mark’s face crumpled.
“Because I was a coward.”
Drew nodded.
He did not hug him.
But he stayed in the room.
