Chapter 8 - The Missing Memory Card

Police searched Vanessa’s car.

They found clothing.

Cash.

Two prepaid phones.

A passport.

And a small envelope taped beneath the spare tire.

Inside was the missing memory card.

The recordings covered eight months.

Vanessa had filmed the punishment room from multiple angles.

She used the footage to monitor the children while she remained upstairs.

Some clips showed Drew comforting Lily.

Sharing food.

Wrapping her in his hoodie.

Standing in front of the camera when she cried.

Other clips showed Vanessa entering with a tray.

She would make the children answer questions before feeding them.

Who pays for this house?

Who takes care of you?

Who will your father believe?

Drew always answered carefully.

“You.”

Vanessa demanded more.

“Not your mother?”

Drew shook his head.

Their biological mother, Sarah, had died in a car accident.

Vanessa wanted the children to say she had replaced her.

Lily refused.

One recording showed her saying, “My mommy is in heaven.”

Vanessa removed the food tray.

Drew begged her to leave Lily’s portion.

She did not.

Another recording captured Drew’s injury.

He tried to block Vanessa from pulling Lily toward the stairs.

Vanessa shoved him aside.

His foot twisted beneath him.

He screamed.

She looked at the swelling and said, “Stand up.”

He could not.

She dragged him into the room by his hoodie.

Investigators stopped the video.

Even experienced officers needed a moment.

The final recording was made the morning of the escape.

Vanessa told the children she would be gone for one hour.

“If you make noise, nobody gets food tonight.”

After she left, Drew climbed onto an overturned plastic bin.

He forced the window until the frame cracked.

Then he lifted Lily through first.

He followed using only one working leg.

For seven blocks, he carried her.

The memory card did more than prove abuse.

It proved deliberate planning.

Vanessa had documented her own control.

But one clip created a new problem.

A man’s voice could be heard upstairs.

Mark’s voice.

👉 The recordings proved Vanessa’s guilt—but they also raised the question of how much the children’s father had heard.
