Chapter 2 - The House Seven Blocks Away

Drew and Lily lived seven blocks from Peter.
The distance was short for an adult.
For a starving six-year-old with an untreated leg injury carrying a three-year-old child, it should have been impossible.
Their father, Mark, was Peter’s older brother.
Mark had remarried two years after the children’s mother died.
His new wife, Vanessa, seemed perfect.
She volunteered at school events.
Brought homemade cookies to neighbors.
Posted smiling family photos online.
She spoke gently in public.
Peter had never liked how quickly her voice changed when the children made mistakes.
But Mark always defended her.
“She’s trying to be their mother.”
Peter would answer, “They already had one.”
That always ended the conversation.
Over the past year, Peter noticed Drew becoming quieter.
The boy stopped asking to stay overnight.
Lily began flinching whenever someone closed a door too hard.
Peter asked Mark whether something was wrong.
Mark blamed grief.
Then behavior problems.
Then school pressure.
Vanessa had explanations for everything.
Drew’s bruises came from falling off a bicycle.
Lily’s weight loss came from picky eating.
Drew’s limp came from pretending to avoid chores.
Peter believed none of it completely.
But every time he asked the children privately, Drew said the same thing.
“We’re okay.”
Now, while paramedics examined him, Peter understood why.
Drew had not been protecting Vanessa.
He had been protecting Lily.
A medic lifted the hem of Drew’s pant leg carefully.
His ankle was badly swollen.
The injury was not fresh.
“How long has this been like this?” she asked.
Drew looked toward Lily.
Peter saw the calculation in his eyes.
The fear of saying too much.
“It happened when I fell,” he whispered.
“When?”
Drew did not answer.
Lily spoke from the other medic’s arms.
“Before the dark days.”
The room became still.
Officer Daniel Ruiz looked at Peter.
“What are the dark days?”
Peter shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Lily buried her face in the medic’s shoulder.
Drew began crying without making a sound.

Then he whispered, “That’s when she stops bringing food.”
👉 The abuse was not a single punishment—it had a name the children had been forced to learn.
