Chapter 7 - Vanessa’s Story

Vanessa called police the following morning.

She claimed she was the victim.

She said Drew had attacked Lily, damaged the basement window, and fled.

The locks, she explained, were used to keep children away from dangerous tools.

The blankets belonged to a family movie night.

The food wrappers were old.

The wall marks were a game.

She denied pushing Drew.

She denied withholding food.

She accused Peter of manipulating the children because he had always disliked her.

Her attorney arranged for her to surrender.

She arrived at the station wearing a cream coat and no makeup.

She cried for cameras.

“I love those children.”

The footage appeared on local news.

At the hospital, Drew saw her face on a silent television.

His heart monitor accelerated.

Peter shut it off.

“You’re safe.”

Drew looked toward the door.

“She always says that before people come over.”

Grace interviewed Lily separately using toys and simple questions.

The child struggled to explain time.

But she knew routines.

The dark room.

The locked door.

The cup.

The sound of Vanessa’s shoes on the stairs.

Grace asked what happened when Lily cried.

The girl placed a toy person outside a toy house.

“She turns off the light.”

“What happens next?”

Lily covered the toy child with her hand.

“Drew sings.”

That was how he kept his sister calm.

In darkness.

Hungry.

With a broken ankle.

Grace asked whether anyone else came downstairs.

Lily picked up the toy father.

She placed him near the door.

Then she moved him away.

“Daddy goes work.”

“Did Daddy hear you?”

Lily nodded.

Peter stopped breathing.

“When?”

The girl pointed to her ear.

“We banged.”

Grace asked what happened.

Lily moved the father figure toward the basement.

Then she made Vanessa stand between him and the door.

“She said mice.”

Mark had heard the children banging below him.

Vanessa told him the sound came from pipes or mice.

And he had walked away.

👉 Lily’s simple game revealed that Mark had once stood only feet from the locked room while his children begged to be found.
