Chapter 5 - THE RIDGE

Tyler tried to handcuff me.

I disarmed him without firing.

Nguyen covered the tower entrance.

Several Marines who had laughed earlier finally chose sides.

Not because I revealed rank.

Not because someone saluted.

Because they saw Tyler follow unlawful orders.

Blake ran toward Hale’s vehicles.

A warning shot struck the dirt beside him.

Not mine.

Hale’s men were willing to kill their own observer.

Blake turned back.

Fear had broken his loyalty.

The Marines used range trucks as cover.

Nguyen unlocked the south gate manually.

I kept the altered cartridge inside a shielded pouch.

Its transmitter still blinked.

We placed it inside an empty drone and launched it north.

Hale’s vehicles followed the false signal.

That bought us twelve minutes.

Enough to reach the ammunition bunker.

Inside, we found crates marked for humanitarian training.

Each contained tracker rounds.

Thousands.

One crate bore Fort Sentinel’s address.

Then Tyler admitted he had been sending soldiers there for “advanced evaluation.”

None had returned to the unit.

The program was not only tracking weapons.

It was collecting shooters.
