Hale had used facial reconstruction and voice training to create a Daniel Reed replacement.
His name was Nathan Cole.
A former intelligence operative selected for resemblance.
Nathan had appeared in intercepted videos to manipulate me and other witnesses.
The real Daniel remained deeper inside the base.
The replacement claimed he had become Daniel legally through sealed orders.
Marriage records.
Service files.
Medical data.
The program could replace a person by replacing the institutions that recognized them.
Nathan said Daniel died.
Hale said Daniel lived.
Both wanted my reaction.
I refused to answer emotional questions.
Independent DNA testing identified Nathan.
Then a prisoner transport list revealed two Daniel Reeds.
One biological.
One “continuity officer.”
The real Daniel’s status:
TRANSFERRED.
Destination unknown.
The raid recovered thirty soldiers but not my husband.
Hale escaped through an aircraft tunnel.
Then Nathan offered Daniel’s location.
In exchange, he wanted Daniel’s legal identity.
Denied.
He gave the location anyway because Hale had abandoned him.
