Chapter 11 - THE TRUST CAME APART

Forensic analysis of the trust transactions took almost a year.

The final picture was less dramatic than my imagination and more damaging than Derek’s version.

The trust held investments with real value.

Meridian had not collapsed.

In fact, its valuation increased.

The cryptocurrency fluctuated but remained significant.

So the missing money had not simply vanished.

The question became ownership and control.

Because my consent to trust creation had been obtained through material misrepresentation, we challenged portions of the arrangement.

Settlement became preferable to extended litigation.

Derek agreed to unwind the family trust.

Assets traceable to joint marital funds were returned to marital accounting subject to equitable division.

My grandmother’s inheritance never entered.

Meridian interests were valued.

Tax consequences were considered.

Some assets were sold.

Others allocated.

No bonfire.

No instant transfer of everything to me.

The settlement also addressed the unauthorized use of my signature and Derek’s representations.

He stipulated that he mischaracterized the documents he asked me to approve.

That admission mattered more to me than the technical victory.

He had spent months saying:

You signed.

Finally:

I did not tell you what you were really signing.

May you like

Different sentence.

Different truth.
