Chapter 13 - THE DIVORCE
Our divorce became final eighteen months after the night Lily was twelve days old.
I kept my name:
Emma Bennett.
It was already mine.
I did not need to surrender it because the marriage ended.
Property division reflected marital assets, trust unwinding, debts, and settlement adjustments.
Derek did not lose everything.
I did not receive everything.
I received enough to establish a stable home.
My inheritance remained properly separate to the extent protected under applicable law and our settlement.
Lily’s college account was placed under dual-control rules requiring documented oversight so neither parent could treat it like personal money.
I insisted on that.
Derek agreed.
At final hearing, the judge asked whether reconciliation remained possible.
“No,” I said.
Derek said the same.
That surprised me.
Then he looked at me.
Not angrily.
Not pleading.
Finished.
There was grief in that.
Also relief.
