Chapter 5 - WHY NOAH WAS AFRAID OF HIS MOTHER
Noah had been afraid before the garage.
We learned that slowly.
Vanessa and Michael’s custody arrangement alternated weekends with midweek visits.
Noah began having stomachaches before going to his mother’s house.
Michael thought separation anxiety.
Reasonable.
Vanessa accused him of alienation.
Also predictable.
Then a school counselor documented something.
Noah said:
“Mom gets mad when I talk about Dad.”
Not abuse by itself.
Divorce makes adults behave badly.
Then:
“She says Dad is trying to steal our horses.”
Again.
Adult conflict entering a child’s world.
Then:
“She says if Dad wins, we won’t have anywhere to live.”
False.
Vanessa had a separate townhouse.
But she had made a seven-year-old responsible for financial anxiety.
The garage confrontation escalated that fear.
After Michael fell, Vanessa’s first priority was not calling 911.
According to Noah, she told him:
“If you tell anyone, Daddy goes away forever.”
That statement was later corroborated partially by an audio fragment.
Noah had a children’s smartwatch.
Its emergency voice-note feature had activated when he fell against shelving.
Thirty-one seconds were saved.
Vanessa’s voice:
Noah, listen to me.
Then crying.
Then:
You say Dad fell.
Noah:
You hit him.
Vanessa:
No. You are confused.
Then movement.
The file ended.
