Chapter 2 - The Camera Nobody Remembered

The police officer stood beside me as I opened the security footage.
My hands were steady.
But inside, I was falling apart.
Because I knew what everyone was thinking.
They saw a mother.
A sick child.
A terrible accident.
And they wanted an explanation.
Brandon paced near the hospital bed.
“You’re really doing this now?”
I looked at him.
“Now is exactly when I should do this.”
His jaw tightened.
“You’re making this about yourself.”
That sentence hurt.
Because somehow, even in the emergency room, he was still trying to control the story.
The video loaded.
The dining room appeared.
Earlier that evening.
Nancy sat at the table coloring.
The same table where everything happened.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then the officer leaned closer.
“Pause.”
The footage stopped.
Nancy wasn’t alone.
Someone else was in the room.
Someone standing behind her.
Someone whose face was outside the camera angle.
My heart started pounding.
The doctor looked at me.
“You knew something was wrong.”
I nodded.
“I knew Nancy wouldn’t do this.”
Brandon looked away.
That reaction didn’t escape me.
Because a father who believed his daughter would be innocent would fight for her.
Not question his wife.
The officer adjusted the footage.
“Can you enhance this?”
A few seconds later, the image became clearer.
The person’s hand appeared.
Holding a small container.
A container from our kitchen.
The magnets had not been scattered.
They had been placed.
Carefully.
One by one.
Evelyn suddenly covered her mouth.
The room noticed.
The police officer turned toward her.
“Mrs. Hayes?”
She looked terrified.
“I…”
She stopped.
That pause told me everything.
She knew something.
Then Brandon stepped in front of her.
“Leave my mother out of this.”
The officer looked at him.
“Why?”
Brandon didn’t answer.
