Chapter 7 - The Necklace Nancy Remembered

Evelyn touched her necklace.

The same necklace Nancy described.

Her face turned pale.

“That’s impossible.”

But Nancy knew.

Children remember things adults think they forget.

The police asked gentle questions.

No pressure.

No fear.

Only simple details.

Nancy described the woman.

Not Evelyn.

Someone else.

Someone wearing Evelyn’s necklace.

A copy.

A disguise.

That changed everything.

Because someone wanted us to believe Evelyn was involved.

Someone wanted suspicion directed at the wrong person.

Brandon looked at his mother.

“You knew?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

For the first time, I believed her.

Because fear and guilt looked different.

Evelyn had guilt.

But she also had fear.

The officer found another security recording.

A hallway camera.

The night before the accident.

A woman entered our house.

She had access.

She knew the layout.

And she was carrying a key.

The officer paused the video.

The key had a company logo.

Brandon’s company.

Someone inside his organization had been involved.

Then the woman turned toward the camera.

Her face became visible.

And Brandon whispered:

“No…”

Because he recognized her.
