The police took Brandon to a separate room for questioning.
Not arrested.
Not yet.
But no longer free to control the situation.
I stayed beside Nancy.
Watching her sleep.
Every breath reminded me how close I came to losing her.
The doctor explained the damage.

“Why?”

“Because I thought I could fix my son.”
I looked away.
“You protected him.”
She whispered:
“I know.”
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Brandon inside our house.
Holding the magnet container.
But the timestamp was from a day before Nancy was hurt.
